This restlessness can be traced throughout the entirety of Van Vliet’s frenetic oeuvre. Drawing on the visceral power of mid-century New York School abstraction as well late twentieth century European painting, Van Vliet embellishes those legacies with a twist of terror and weirdness, his own brand of American surrealism.
Don Van Vliet was born in Glendale, California, in 1941. Since 1985 Van Vliet’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Bielefelder Kunstverein, Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York and the Brandt Foundation in Greenwich, Connecticut. Don Van Vliet died at home in northern California in 2010.
